Red is the colour of passion. And you won’t find music more passionate than the one of Marie Ulven. She’s a Norwegian indie rock heroine who operates under the moniker girl in red (no capitals).
The 20-year-old singer started releasing tracks to her SoundCloud and in short time she had amassed a solid base of eager fans wanting to hear more of the her brand of moody, dreamy pop music.
In her home country she was singled out as someone to watch out for, and it didn’t take long before her tune “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” was to be found on New York Times’ prestigious list of best songs of 2018.
The up-and-comer has seen her bedroom pop songs gradually gain more and more attention throughout the world.
So far, girl in red has released two EPs, Chapter 1 (2018) and Chapter 2 (2019) as well as the single “Midnight Love” which is the first taste of her upcoming debut album.
Her songs are short, sweet and to the point. If you have a look at her social channels, you’ll find a stream of ponderings about the world and state of things. The same thing wanders into her songs along with themes like love, sorrow and obsession – put inside exceptionally catchy and stellar guitar pop songs with an identity all her own.
girl in red has been busy on the touring circuit which has brought her across the Atlantic on several occasions. She’ll only see more of that when her debut album lands sometime in 2021.
Come catch this Norwegian DIY sensation at Roskilde Festival 2020 before she makes it big.
